The screw count is worked from the maximum spacing in IRC Table R702.3.5 with the sheet run across the framing, rather than from a flat rate per sheet. The compound figure is National Gypsum's published allowance of 9 gallons per 1,000 sq ft of board, which names no finish level, so Level 5 needs more than it says.

How much drywall do I need?

Three numbers answer it, and only the first is the one people ask for. Net area divided by sheet area gives you the sheets. Feet of joint gives you the tape and most of the compound. And the finish level decides how many times somebody comes back with a knife, which is the part that costs money and the part no calculator asks about.

Working out the drywall square footage

Measure each wall and ceiling, multiply, add them up, then take out the openings. Doors and windows are worth deducting properly rather than ignoring: a single patio door is 20 square feet, most of a sheet. What is not worth deducting is a switch box or an outlet, because you cut those out of a whole sheet anyway. That is why the waste allowance exists.

If you are boarding both faces of a partition, count both. It reads as obvious written down and it is the commonest single mistake in a first drywall order.

A drywall screw count is a spacing, not a rate

Every other drywall calculator gives you screws as a flat number: 32 a sheet, or one per square foot. The code does not work that way. IRC Table R702.3.5 sets a maximum spacing, and the spacing changes with the surface and with the framing.

  • Any ceiling: screws no more than 12 inches on center.
  • A wall framed at 16 inches: 16 inches.
  • A wall framed at 24 inches: 12 inches.

Read that last pair again, because it inverts what most people assume. Going to 24 inch studs gives you a third fewer studs, so it ought to give you a third fewer screws. It does not, because the code tightens the spacing down each stud to compensate. Counted out on a 4x8 sheet, you go from 28 screws to 25. You save about a tenth.

Two independent documents say the same thing, which is the reason to trust it rather than a single reading. GA-216 section 5.4, the Gypsum Association application standard, puts it in its own words: not more than 12 inches for ceilings and 16 for walls at 16 inch framing, and not more than 12 for both once the framing goes to 24.

Six finish levels, and eggshell paint picks one for you

This is the part with no British equivalent. GA-214 defines finish levels 0 through 5, and the level is not a matter of how fussy you are, it is set by what goes on top of it.

Level 4 is the normal house finish, specified for flat paint and light textures. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat of compound over the entire surface. The dividing line is the thing worth knowing in the paint aisle rather than afterwards: eggshell, semigloss, gloss, a deep tone, or severe up or down lighting all put you in Level 5. The Department of Defense guide specification for gypsum board goes further and makes Level 5 the default for walls, partitions and ceilings unless something else is specified.

What that means in practice is that a paint choice made in ten seconds can add a whole operation to the job, over every square foot rather than just the joints. Nobody selling the paint mentions it.

The ceiling rules are about sag, and one is about fire

Most of the thickness rules on a ceiling exist because gypsum absorbs moisture and a wet panel between joists goes slack. So a water-based texture, sprayed or hand applied, changes what is allowed: three eighths inch board is out entirely, and half inch at 24 inch framing has to become 5/8 or a sag-resistant ceiling board. A ceiling asked to carry insulation above it is capped separately again, by weight.

The exception is the garage ceiling with a habitable room over it, and that one is about fire. Type X board, run perpendicular to the framing, fastened at 6 inches on center rather than 12. Half the spacing, so roughly double the screws, on the one ceiling in a house that is holding a fire separation together.

The drywall material list, and what drives each line

Sheets are the cheap part of a drywall job and finishing is the expensive part, so the number that matters is feet of joint. A 12 foot wall at 8 feet high takes six 4x8 sheets or four 4x12s. Identical area. But the 4x8 layout leaves about 20 feet of joint and the 4x12 layout leaves 12, because the butt joints vanish. Butt joints are the worst kind: there is no factory taper, so the filler has to stand proud of the board and be feathered wide enough to hide.

The tool works the joint length out from the run and the height, which is the calculation nobody does and the one that answers whether the long sheets are worth carrying.

What a drywall sheet weighs, and what that number is not

The pounds per square foot here come from GA-235, and that table is headed for use in calculating dead loads. They are design values and they round upward: half inch reads 2.0 psf, so a 4x8 comes out at 64 pounds. The sheet you pick up is a little lighter, and a lightweight half inch panel is lighter again by a real margin. Erring heavy is the right direction for deciding whether one person can carry it, and it is the correct figure for the question that has consequences, which is what a ceiling is holding up.

A British sheet gets skimmed. An American sheet gets taped.

The same material has two names and it is not only a spelling difference. A British sheet is 2400 by 1200 in 12.5mm and comes with a skim coat over the whole face as the normal finish. An American sheet is 4 by 8 in half inch and is taped, with a finish level from a published scale. The framing is at 16 or 24 inches rather than 400 or 600. The prohibitions come from a building code rather than a trade standard. So the two pages ask different questions and cite different documents, and neither is the other with the nouns swapped.

It estimates a layout rather than drawing yours

It does not lay out your sheets. It estimates the joint length from a sensible layout across the run and height you gave, which is a much better starting point than guessing a roll of tape, and is not a cutting list. It does not price anything. And it does not tell you your job passes: fastener spacing, thickness and Type X requirements are adopted state by state, and in Canada under the provincial code, so the citations here are the shape of the rule and the local edition is the authority.

Common questions

How many sheets of drywall do I need?

Take the net area in square feet, openings already deducted, and divide by the area of one sheet: 32 sq ft for a 4x8, 40 for a 4x10, 48 for a 4x12, 54 for a 54 inch by 12 foot sheet. Then add waste. Ten percent is the usual allowance and it is generous on a plain rectangular room and thin on a room full of windows, closets and switch boxes. The tool rounds up, because you cannot buy nine tenths of a sheet.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

It depends on the plane and the framing, and it is a spacing rather than a rate. IRC Table R702.3.5 allows screws no more than 12 inches on center on any ceiling, 16 inches on a wall framed at 16 inches, and 12 inches on a wall framed at 24 inches. Counted out, a 4x8 on a wall at 16 inch framing takes 28 screws: seven studs crossed, four rows down each. The same sheet at 24 inch framing takes 25, not the 19 you would get by assuming a third fewer studs means a third fewer screws.

How much drywall mud do I need?

National Gypsum publishes 9 gallons, or 123 to 140 pounds, of all purpose ready mix per 1,000 sq ft of board. Note two things about that figure. It is per square foot of BOARD rather than per foot of joint, even though all the work happens at the joints. And it names no finish level, so treat it as an allowance for a normal taped and finished job: below that you will use less, and at Level 5 you are skimming every square foot and will use materially more. This tool prints the published figure rather than scaling it by level, because a multiplier per level would be ours rather than the manufacturer.

What is the difference between a Level 4 and a Level 5 finish?

Can I use 1/2 inch drywall on a ceiling?

On framing at 16 inches on center, yes. On framing at 24 inches, yes, applied perpendicular to the framing, until you add a water-based texture: IRC Table R702.3.5 footnote d then requires the thickness to go up from 1/2 inch to 5/8, or a 1/2 inch sag-resistant ceiling board to be used instead. Three eighths is a different matter and is not allowed on a ceiling receiving a water-based texture at all, nor where the ceiling has to support insulation above it. All of these are about sag rather than fire, and a sagging ceiling shows up months later rather than on the day.

Does a garage ceiling really need 5/8 Type X?

Where there is a habitable room over the garage, that ceiling is a fire separation and the code treats it differently. IRC Table R702.3.5 footnote e is specific: Type X board, installed perpendicular to the framing, fastened at a maximum of 6 inches on center with minimum 1 7/8 inch 6d coated nails or equivalent drywall screws. Six inches rather than twelve. That roughly doubles the screws in every sheet, on the one ceiling in the house where the board is doing a job other than looking flat, and it is the detail most often missed.

Is drywall the same as sheetrock, and how much sheetrock do I need?

In practice yes, and in strictness no. Sheetrock is a United States Gypsum trademark that has become the everyday word for the material in much of the country, the way a vacuum flask became a thermos. The standard the panels are made to is ASTM C1396 whatever the brand on the paper, so a calculator does not care which word you use. Google does not either: it buckets drywall calculator, sheetrock calculator and dry wall calculator together as one search. So the answer to how much sheetrock you need is the answer above, unchanged.

How do I calculate how much drywall I need for a ceiling?

The same way as a wall, with two differences that matter more than the arithmetic. Screws go at 12 inches on center rather than 16, so a ceiling sheet takes more fasteners than the same sheet on a wall. And the thickness rules are stricter, because a ceiling is holding itself up against gravity while a wall is only leaning on studs: three eighths is out under a sprayed texture, half inch at 24 inch framing has to become 5/8 or sag-resistant board under one, and a ceiling carrying insulation is capped by weight. Set the tool to ceiling and it applies all of that.

Do I buy drywall mud and tape by area or by joint length?

Compound is sold against area and tape is sold against joint length, which is why most calculators give you a mud figure and no tape figure at all. National Gypsum quotes compound per 1,000 sq ft of board. Tape is bought in 75, 250 and 500 foot rolls and what you need depends on how many joints your layout produces, which is a different number for 4x8 sheets than for 4x12 on the same wall. This tool works out the feet of joint so the tape figure means something.

Are 4x12 sheets worth the awkwardness?

On a long wall, usually. A 12 foot wall 8 feet high in 4x8 sheets gives you about 20 feet of joint to tape. The same wall in 4x12 sheets gives 12, because the butt joints disappear. That is 40 percent less taping and 40 percent less sanding for identical board area, and butt joints are the ones that are hardest to hide because there is no factory taper to fill. Against that: a 4x12 of 5/8 weighs about 120 pounds, it will not go up a tight stairwell, and one person cannot hang it.

Does this work in Canada?

The arithmetic and the materials do. Canadian yards sell the same 4x8 sheets in the same 1/2 and 5/8 inch thicknesses, and the Gypsum Association documents behind the weights and the fastener spacing are North American rather than United States only. What differs is the code: a Canadian job is under the National Building Code as adopted by the province rather than the IRC, so treat the code citations here as the shape of the rule and check the number against your own provincial edition before it matters.
