These are not the real questions

Nobody's are. The live question bank for The CITB Health, safety and environment test for operatives is not published, and the awarding body's own free practice test says its questions "are not used in the real test, but they are based on the same topics". These are written from the published guidance the test examines, and every answer cites the guidance it came from so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Every answer tells you where it came from

This is the whole difference. A free mock test normally gives you a right answer and no reason, so a question you got wrong teaches you one fact and nothing about why.

Every question here cites the HSE guidance it was written from, and links to it. Get one wrong and you end up at the paragraph rather than at a forum, which is the difference between memorising an answer and knowing the subject.

And they are not the real questions

Nobody's are, and anyone claiming otherwise is either wrong or reproducing somebody else's copyright. CITB does not publish its live bank, it sells it in GT100 and GT200.

What the test actually examines is published HSE guidance, which is free. So the honest way to write a practice test is from that guidance, with the source attached. It is also exactly what DVSA says about its own free theory practice: "The questions are not used in the real test, but they are based on the same topics as the test."

The real numbers

  • 50 questions in 45 minutes, whichever level you sit.
  • Pass at 45 out of 50 for operatives and specialists. That is 90%.
  • 46 out of 50 for managers and professionals, which is 92%.
  • The pass is valid two years for a card application.

Five wrong answers is the whole allowance on the operatives test. It is a much higher bar than most people expect walking in, and it is why sitting a mock and scoring 40 is worth knowing about beforehand rather than on the day.

The score is broken down by area, because a total is useless

CITB tests five knowledge areas, and this marks against all five:

  • Working environment
  • Occupational health
  • Safety
  • High risk activities
  • Specialist

"You got 38" tells you to revise everything. "You got 4 out of 10 on occupational health" tells you to go and read about noise, vibration and dust, and that is a Saturday morning rather than a fortnight.

Why sitting it twice is a trap

This is the arithmetic every practice site quietly avoids. Two papers of K questions drawn from a bank of N share about K squared over N questions.

A 50 question mock drawn from a bank of 60 repeats about 42 of them on the second attempt. You would score beautifully and be remembering answers rather than knowing the material, which is actively worse than not practising because you walk into the real test confident. This bank holds 155 questions, so the repeat is about 16, and a second sitting is genuinely a second sitting.

The tool says the figure out loud rather than hiding it, and the revision mode is the answer: it comes back to the questions you have not answered right twice, so the ones you keep failing keep appearing and the ones you know stop wasting your time.

Twice, not once

A question retires after two correct answers in a row rather than one, because getting a four option question right once is a one in four accident. Twice in a row is one in sixteen, which is close enough to knowing it. Get one wrong and the streak resets.

Which level do you need?

There are three tests and picking the wrong one wastes the fee and the trip. Operatives covers the Labourer, Trainee, Apprentice, most Blue Skilled Worker and most Gold Advanced Craft cards. Specialists adds a subject such as supervision or work at height and is needed for the Gold Supervisor card. Managers and professionals is for the Black Manager card and the Academically or Professionally Qualified cards.

The higher tests are supersets: they contain everything in the operatives test plus their own material. This bank is the operatives one, so it is the right practice for the first group and a reasonable foundation for the other two.

What is the real pass mark?

45 out of 50 for the operatives and specialist tests, and 46 out of 50 for managers and professionals. That is 90 and 92 per cent, so it is a high bar: you can afford five wrong answers on the operatives test and four on the managers one. The full mock here marks at 45 and tells you how many more you needed.

How long is the real test?

45 minutes for 50 questions, whichever level you sit. That is 54 seconds a question, which is comfortable if you know the material and not if you are working it out.

What are the five knowledge areas?

Working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities, and specialist. Your score here is broken down by area, because "you got 38" tells you nothing useful and "you got 4 out of 10 on occupational health" tells you exactly what to read next.

Why does it warn me about sitting it twice?

Because of the arithmetic. Two papers of 50 drawn from a bank of 155 share about 16 questions. That is low enough for a second sitting to teach you something, and it is why the bank is the size it is: at 60 questions the same paper would repeat about 42, so you would be remembering answers rather than knowing the subject. The revision mode exists for exactly that: it comes back to the ones you have not answered right twice rather than drawing fresh.

How long is a test pass valid for?

Two years. The pass has to be within the last two years when you apply for the card, which catches people who sit the test early, take a while to finish the qualification, and find the test has gone stale by the time the application goes in.

Which level do I need?

Operatives for the Labourer, Trainee, Apprentice, most Blue Skilled Worker and most Gold Advanced Craft cards. Specialists for the Gold Supervisor card and certain Blue and Gold cards. Managers and professionals for the Black Manager card and the Academically or Professionally Qualified cards. This bank is the operatives one.
